Putting the Patient First: User-Centered Design for Health Tech Solutions

The Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health (HITECH) Act of 2009 has had a profound impact on the Health Tech industry. Even now, over a decade later, the legislation from the Federal Department of Health and Human Services continues to drive technological advancements in the field.

In today’s market, Electronic Medical Record (EMR) and Electronic Health Record (EHR) software are dominated by a handful of major players. Companies such as Epic, Allscripts, Praxis EMR, and eClinicalWorks, among others, are recognized as leaders in the industry. While these software solutions are HIPPA compliant and serve the needs of healthcare professionals, they have been criticized for lacking a user-centric design.

Historically, healthcare professionals have found EMR/EHR software to be “clunky” and in need of improvement. This was particularly true in 2009 when the concept of mobilization of software and applications was still in its infancy. However, as technology has evolved, the need for user-friendly design has become increasingly important.

Final Thoughts

At present, Health Tech clients are seeking customized solutions to overcome the limitations of their current software. Haneke Design’s development and design teams are actively working with clients to address this need and create new solutions that layer EMR/EHR software with healthcare management.
